HAWAII ISLAND, Hawaii (KHON2) — Heavy downpours are causing issues on Hawaii Island. According to the National Weather Service, a flash flood warning was triggered, with rain hitting parts of Kau, Puna and South Hilo.
County officials have opened shelters at Keeau Armory, Robert Herkes Gym and Naalehu Community Center.
The following roads were also closed due to heavy flooding:
- Highway 11 in the Kau district between mile markers 57 and 62
- Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo between Ponahawai Street and Bishop Street
Drivers are also advised to travel with caution in Puna since the district is experiencing heavy rain and water run-off on Highway 30 in Keaau and Rout 11 in Mt. View and Glenwood.
“In cases like this, we enter a state of enhanced monitoring and depending on what we’re seeing out there, in the talks that we’re having with the National Weather Service, we would partially activate or fully activate our emergency operations center. At this time, based on what we’re seeing, we’re still on that enhanced monitoring stage,” explained Jesse Sceppe, Hawaii County Civil Defense.
The flash flood warning is in effect until 10:45 p.m.
