Hawaii student athletes celebrate National Signing Day

High school student-athletes from across the state of Hawaii took a significant step toward their collegiate dreams on Wednesday during the non-football National Signing Day.

Ceremonies were held throughout the islands, including a large gathering in Waikiki, where more than 50 student-athletes celebrated signing with their respective college programs in various sports.

Among the headliners was that the University of Hawaii successfully retained several standouts. Kamehameha boys’ volleyball star Kainoa Wade, son of Rainbow Warriors head coach Charlie Wade, signed to play for UH. The Rainbow Wahine volleyball program also gained a local talent with Punahou’s Kahea Moriwaki, while the UH baseball team secured Mililani’s Leahiaukai Araujo-Waiau.

Notable signings with Power Five programs included Saint Louis baseball star Bruin Agbayani, who committed to Michigan, and Mililani’s Malosi Mataafa-Alferos, who signed with Oregon. Kamehameha softball standout Kezia Lucas will head to Arizona, while Pearl City soccer player Julia Oka signed with Utah.
