Heavy rain threat triggers statewide flood watch

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Periods of heavy rain could impact parts of the state this weekend, with numerous showers expected through the end of next week.

What You Need To Know:

*Hit-or-miss heavy rain will impact the Hawaiian Islands this weekend

*This current disturbance is called an “upper-level low” and could trigger heavy rain even for drier leeward areas

*The highest chance of rain will be in the afternoon hours and early evening

*The lowest rain chances will be during the late evenings and early morning

*Wetter than normal weather will linger in Hawaii for another week

An unstable upper-level disturbance (upper-level low, doesn’t it sound contradictory?) will bring continued heavy rain and thunderstorms, raising flood risks statewide until Saturday. Some of these storms may trigger heavy rainfall and gusty winds. By Monday, this disturbance will weaken and shift away, reducing the threat of thunderstorms and downpours. However, wet weather (with periods of morning sunshine) may persist through the week as another storm system approaches.

This weekend’s storm will meander over the state. Due to the “convective” nature of this type of storm…it may be sunny one minute, and become a downpour the next minute.

High rain chances remain for at least all of next week and beyond. Stay tuned.

Have an alternate plan in case it rains.

Looking ahead to Wednesday through Friday, another robust storm system will approach , possibly generating southerly winds over the western half of the state. This could usher in another round of heavy rain and thunderstorms, particularly impacting Niihau, Kauai, and Oahu. Kauai County may face the highest risk of flooding, thunderstorms, and gusty winds during this period, subject to change as this type of storm is highly unpredictable due to unforcastable pop-up downpours.
