The shooting ended what had been an island-wide pursuit as the suspect, later identified as Sidney Tafokitau, led HPD officers all over the island.

“My understanding is he went from Kapahulu, over to the Windward side, from there is where at gunpoint took another vehicle,” Chief Logan said after the incident. “From that point he headed to the North Shore and was in that side of the island, went back to district 2 area. He brought the officers back and forth on the North Shore and came back to the town area and back towards Kahala Mall, back to the officers again and up to the University area.”

Tafokitau was shot and killed on University Avenue. The autopsy showed that he died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Two officers were hospitalized for injuries sustained during the incident.
