HONOLULU (KHON2) — Dangerous surf is hitting north-facing shores now and through the weekend and Honolulu Ocean Safety is preparing with full staffing and warning beachgoers.
“This is serious surf that we’re having. Looks like we’re going to have largest periods of swells next week. Right now it’s in 20 to 25-foot face value. Really serious stuff, really life-threatening,” Lt. John Hoogsteden warned.
The National Weather Service said surf heights will exceed warning levels with waves expected to reach up to 40 feet.
Traffic might also be a problem, with people wanting to check out the surf.
North Shore lifeguards will have extended hours during this time and are already busy patrolling with a couple of close calls.
“I’m just asking people to stay away from the water, stay away from the ocean. Don’t go on the sand. Use common sense, use caution. I’ll say it again — it’s life threatening surf.”
