Some tips include:

  • act within the return window
  • keep receipts or proof of purchase
  • have identification on hand, many stores require it to prevent fraud

Cameron Nakashima of the BBB warned that return scams are not limited to retailers.

“Some businesses offer to handle returns for you, asking for personal information and claiming they’ll take a small commission from the refund,” he said. “But most of these services are scams. The safest approach is to go directly to the company where you made the purchase.”

Nakashima also cautioned consumers about imposter websites designed to mimic legitimate companies’ pages.

To verify a business, the BBB recommends visiting their website and checking the company’s profile page, where an official link to their site can be found.
