HONOLULU (KHON2) — As New Year’s Eve approaches, celebrations marked by fireworks can pose a threat to pets, who often experience fear and stress from the loud noises. Brandy Shimabukuro, Manager of Communications at the Hawaiian Humane Society, shared important tips to help keep pets safe during the festivities.
“Pets have highly sensitive hearing, and the loud cracks and booms of fireworks can cause significant distress,” Shimabukuro said. “Recognizing signs of stress is crucial in keeping your pets calm and secure.”
Common signs of stress in pets during fireworks include trembling, pacing, hiding, excessive whining or barking, panting, drooling, and attempts to escape. In some cases, animals may injure themselves while trying to flee from the noise.
To minimize the risk of harm and reduce the number of lost animals, the Hawaiian Humane Society recommends several key safety measures for pet owners:
- Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet, secure area where pets can feel safe. Close windows and curtains to block out noise and light. If leaving home, consider leaving a radio or TV on for familiar sounds. Ensure the area is away from high-traffic spots and escape routes.
- Exercise and Enrichment: Tire out your pet with exercise before the festivities begin. Provide enrichment like treat puzzles to keep their minds occupied.
- Stay Calm and Reassuring: Pets look to their owners for comfort. Remain calm and provide reassurance by staying close to your pet, offering treats, or engaging in soothing activities.
- Identification and Restraint: Ensure pets have up-to-date identification, including a collar with an ID tag and a registered microchip. State law requires microchips for dogs and cats, which can help reunite lost pets with their owners.
- Consult a Veterinarian: For pets with extreme anxiety during fireworks, consult a veterinarian ahead of time for calming aids or therapies.
- Avoid Firework Displays: It’s best to keep pets at home during fireworks to prevent overwhelming them with noise and crowds.
In case a pet becomes lost, the Hawaiian Humane Society encourages owners to file a Lost Pet Report at HawaiianHumane.org or call 808-356-2250. Pet owners should have current photos, microchip details, and information on where and when their pet was last seen.
