To prevent accidents and ensure smooth traffic flow during this time, MPD reminds drivers to follow key rules when traveling through a four-way stop.

Following the Rules of the Road

Drivers who need a little refresher can check out the following road safety tips from MPD:

  • First to Stop, First to Go: The first car to come to a complete stop should proceed first.
  • Tie Goes to the Right: If two cars arrive at the same time, the driver on the right has the right of way.
  • Straight Before Turns: If two cars are directly across from each other and one is turning left, the car going straight has the right of way
  • Pedestrians Always Have the Right of Way: All cars must yield to pedestrians in or approaching a crosswalk
  • Use Turn Signals: Prevent confusion and ensure safe movement by indicating your intended direction

Drivers should also follow the instructions of Maui police officers directing traffic and take extra precautions while traveling.

As always, drivers should wear their seatbelts, avoid distractions and stay off their mobile devices while driving.

Remain vigilant with posted speed limits and maintain a safe distance from other cars to avoid sudden stops.

Of course, when in doubt, allow yourself extra time to travel to your destination to avoid possible delays.

“MPD urges all motorists to be cautious, patient and mindful and asks for your assistance in keeping our roads safe for everyone.”
