HONOLULU (KHON2) — A kona low pressure system is currently centered northwest of Kauai. A Flood Watch for Kauai County is in effect through Saturday night. There is a good possibility of heavy rainfall returning to Kauai on Saturday morning. The main concern is how long the rainband will stay over Kauai before moving northwest as the kona low leaves the area. While conditions are expected to improve by Saturday night, flooding could persist if the transition is slow. There’s also a small chance of another surge of moisture toward Oahu on Saturday night for Oahu.
High pressure is expected to build into the region this weekend as the kona low moves north. This should bring more stable weather with fewer showers as east to southeast winds spread across the state. By Sunday, the threat of heavy rain over Kauai is likely to decrease as more stable conditions settle in.
From Monday onward, typical easterly trade winds will return across the state, bringing only brief passing showers, mainly affecting windward and mountainous areas through the middle of next week.
