Big Island’s second motorcycle collision in two days leaves man dead

PAHOA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Big Island police are investigating a second fatal motorcycle collision in two days, this time happening in Pahoa on the afternoon of Feb. 3.

A motorcyclist, who police believe was in his 30s or 40s, was traveling Pahoa bound on Keaʻau-Pahoa Road and began passing multiple vehicles on the mauka shoulder. The biker then collided with a dump truck that was making a right turn into a driveway.

The motorcyclist was unresponsive when police arrived at the scene and was subsequently transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. He was not wearing a helmet.

The motorcyclist’s identity has not yet been revealed pending the notification of the next of kin.

A 67-year-old Hilo man was operating the dump truck during the collision and was not injured.
