HONOLULU (KHON2) — A murder investigation is underway after an Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate was found dead in his cell.
OCCC facility staff called for a medical emergency on Wednesday, Feb. 5 around 1 a.m. when the 33-year-old male inmate was found with fatal injuries.
According to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the inmate was allegedly assaulted by another 49-year-old inmate in their cell.
Staff began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the inmate. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, Honolulu Police Department and Honolulu Fire Department were activated.
Upon arrival, paramedics took over lifesaving treatment but were unsuccessful. DCR officials said the inmate was pronounced dead around 1:50 a.m.
Department of Law Enforcement officials are taking the lead in the investigation with the help of HPD’s Criminal Investigation Division-Homicide Detail.
