Kona winds return with afternoon showers leeward

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Kona winds have replaced the trade winds and will be in place through next week. Shower activity will now focus over leeward areas in the afternoon through Thursday. Drier conditions return Friday and through the weekend.

Thursday: Morning showers possible along windward coasts, followed by afternoon clouds and showers in interior and leeward areas due to sea breezes.

Friday – Early Next Week:

  • High pressure system and upper level ridge bring stable conditions.
  • Generally tradewind pattern.
  • Western half of the state: Lighter east to east-southeast winds, potential for afternoon sea breezes.
  • Eastern half of the state: Typical tradewind pattern.
  • Overall: Mostly dry conditions.
