CAPTAIN COOK, Hawaii (KHON2) — Big Island police are investigating what appears to be a possible drowning involving 62-year-old Gary Windle of Deer Park, Illinois that occurred on the afternoon of Feb. 22.
Kona patrol officers responded to a report of a man struggling in the water at Manini Point Cove Park in Captain Cook just before 12:30 p.m. According to witnesses, shortly after the man and his wife entered the water to snorkel, Windle was seen floating face down near some rocks.
Good Samaritans pulled Windle to shore and began issuing lifesaving measures until fire personnel arrived to continue the measures. Windle was then transported to the Kona Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
An investigation and autopsy will occur to determine the exact cause of Windle’s death. At this time, authorities do not suspect any foul play.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Kona Patrol Officer Lawrence Matsumoto at (808) 326-4646, ext. 253 or at lawrence.matsumoto@hawaiicounty.gov.
