HONOLULU (KHON2) — So far in 2025, Oahu has seen 11 traffic fatalities compared to five at the same time last year, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
The most recent occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when a 64-year-old man was killed after being run over by his vehicle in Salt Lake.
Officials said the man was having mechanical issues and tried to fix it on Ala Ilima Street.
He told his 33-year-old female passenger to sit in the driver’s seat and press the brake while he addressed the problem.
HPD said the brakes malfunctioned and the vehicle rolled forward, running over the man.
Paramedics arrived and administered life support before transporting him to an emergency room in critical condition.
He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
“This year so far, we’ve seen 24 people lose their lives on our roadways compared to about 13 last year. It’s a call to action,” said Kari Benes, HDOT Highway Safety Manager.
HDOT said many of the traffic incidents have involved pedestrians and they’re working to install special street lights to improve safety.
“You’ve probably seen rapid, flashing beacons. This is actually a street light that a pedestrian can activate. The nice thing is that they are solar powered so you don’t have to worry about tapping into the grid. We should expect to see some of these pop up not just on Oahu, but on our neighbor islands as well,” Benes added.

As for the red light cameras, DOT said they appear to be working as the number of citations are starting to drop.
