HONOLULU (KHON2) — A fire that started in a single-family home on the Big Island Tuesday afternoon was quickly contained by fire crews, with no injuries reported.
According to Hawaii County Fire, the blaze began when the occupant unintentionally ignited the flames while using a torch to clear pests.
When fire crews arrived at the scene, flames had already spread throughout the entire interior of the house.
Firefighters immediately launched an exterior attack on the fire while also making their way inside the structure. No other nearby houses were damaged.
The occupant was able to escape the home on their own and did not suffer any injuries.
During the firefighting efforts, crews discovered multiple propane tanks and gas cans inside the residence.
Hawaii County Fire is urging residents to practice caution when using fire and flammable materials around their homes.
They recommend storing such items properly, installing smoke detectors, and keeping fire extinguishers readily available.
