HONOLULU (KHON2) — A 72-year-old man has died following a fire at a residential building in the Nuuanu area on March 24.
Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) personnel responded to the blaze after receiving a 911 call at 7:16 a.m.
HFD crews arrived at the two-story home at 7:23 a.m. and quickly found the fire, which had started in a bedroom. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive attack, bringing the flames under control by 7:31 a.m. and fully extinguishing the fire by 7:37 a.m.
During a search of the home, firefighters found an unconscious man on the second floor. He was promptly transported to a nearby hospital by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in critical condition.
The man later passed away at the hospital, and his death was pronounced there.
The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental by the HFD Fire Investigator. The estimated damage to the home is $189,000, with an additional $5,000 in damage to the contents of the house.
The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) is still investigating the incident in collaboration with HFD and EMS. No injuries to first responders were reported.
