HONOLULU (KHON2) — At around 12:24 a.m. on Wednesday, HFD received a 911 call reporting a blaze in Kaimuki.
Upon arrival, the first unit found heavy smoke pouring from the second floor of a small two-story residential building. Firefighters immediately began working to contain the flames and protect nearby structures.
During a search of the building, a 79-year-old man was found unresponsive on the second floor. HFD quickly extricated him and transferred him to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at 12:44 a.m. for treatment.
The man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. EMS also transported another bystander for treatment, though their injuries were not life-threatening.
The fire was under control by 12:50 a.m. and fully extinguished by 1:10 a.m.
The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist eight residents—including six adults and two infants—who were displaced by the fire.
No injuries were reported among HFD personnel, and all units have been accounted for.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the damage. Further updates will be provided once the investigation is complete.
This incident is also under investigation by the Honolulu Police Department, though there are no signs of foul play at this time. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
