Mayor Blangiardi signs law to limit Waikiki street festivals, parades

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi signed a new measure into law Wednesday afternoon, placing limits on street festivals and parades in Waikiki.

Starting next year, a maximum of nine permits will be issued annually for street activities in the Waikiki Special District.

Events that have been held for at least 15 years will be exempt from the new restrictions and will be “grandfathered in.”

The law aims to regulate events in Waikiki, which local lawmakers say contribute to heavy traffic, inconvenience residents, visitors, and workers, and put a strain on first responders.
