HONOLULU (KHON2) — This week marks the start of Earth Month, which is a great time to focus on ways we can save energy.
There are some easy, everyday changes people can make to lower their energy bills and help Hawaii move toward a clean energy future. This comes as economic fears swirl and the stock market reels from President Donald Trump’s tariff policy.
“Earth Month is the perfect time to think about how we use energy in our homes and how small, simple changes can add up to big savings,” said Hawaii Energy Executive Director Caroline Carl.
Hawaii Energy offers these energy-saving habits that can start making a difference right away:
- Switch to LED bulbs: LEDs use up to 80% less energy, last 10 to 25 times longer, and don’t contain harmful mercury like CFLs. If you’re still using incandescent or CFLs, you’re missing out on major savings.
- Unplug devices when not in use using an advanced power strip: Electronics like coffee makers and gaming consoles continue to draw power even when turned off. Use an advanced power strip with energy-saving features, like automatic shutdown or surge protection, to cut off power completely when devices are not in use.
- Use ceiling and portable fans instead of AC: Ceiling fans cost pennies to run compared to AC. If using AC, set it to 78°F or higher for comfort and savings, and keep your doors/windows closed while using. For both fans and AC units, make sure to clean or replace filters regularly—this will keep air flowing efficiently and save energy.
- Run full loads in dishwashers and washing machines: This saves both energy and water. Washing clothes in cold water can cut energy use in half.
“While these energy-saving habits are great, regular maintenance is just as important to keep everything running efficiently and ensure long-term savings. Every little step we take makes a big impact—not just for our wallets but for Hawai’i’s clean energy future,” Carl added.
Hawaii Energy has also boosted the following rebates until June 30 to make energy-efficient upgrades more affordable:
- Mini-Split Air Conditioning Systems – Rebates increased by $100, now up to $550 per unit.
- Solar Water Heater Installations – Increased by $500, now offering $2,000 per system.
- Heat Pump Water Heater Tune-Ups – Increased by $100, now $200 per service.
“These rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so we encourage residents to apply soon at hawaiienergy.com/rebates,” Carl said.
Another big change coming is the phase-out of fluorescent light bulbs. As of Jan. 1, compact fluorescent light bulbs can no longer be sold in Hawaii.
Starting Jan. 1, 2026, linear fluorescent tube lights—the long bulbs often found in offices, businesses, and garages—will also be phased out.

“This is great news because LEDs last longer, are mercury-free, and can cut lighting energy costs by up to 90%. Businesses and residents can take advantage of Hawai’i Energy rebates to make the switch more affordable,” Carl said.
