HONOLULU (KHON2) — Kilauea is active once again as the 18th episode of the current eruption began early Tuesday morning.
“Lava began overflowing the south vent at 3:20 a.m.,” the USGS said in a statement.
Fountaining began shortly after from both the north and south vents, with fountains over 650 feet high at the south and over 160 feet high at the north vent.
The floor of Halema’uma’u crater is currently 20% covered fed from both fountains, as deflation commenced and strong tremors increased.
The current eruption began on Dec. 23 and has included pauses between episodes.

The USGS warned nearby communities to beware of vog, tephra and Pele’s hair.
