71-year-old Kona man to serve 20 years in prison for sexual assault

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A Kona man is set to spend the next 20 years in prison for two offenses of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree.

According to Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen, 71-year-old Reuben Lelah of Kailua Kona was sentenced for multiple incidents involving a minor between June and Dec. 2019.

Officials said Lelah went to Kailua Circuit Court on March 15 where he pleaded “Guilty” on both counts of Sexual Assault.

Sexual Assault in the Second Degree is an offense that can carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

On Friday, Leleah received a 10-year prison term for both of his offenses. The Court ordered him to serve both of them consecutively for a total of 20 years.

Prior to being sentenced, Lelah was out of custody on a $40,000 bail. Following Friday’s court appearance, Lelah was ordered out of custody to begin serving his sentence.

According to the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, Detective Scott Dewey led the investigation and was assisted by Sergeant Brandon Mansur.
