KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Hawaiʻi Police Department is investigating a single-vehicle traffic collision in North Kona that left a 75-year-old Kona man in critical condition.
The accident was reported at 1:19 a.m., and officers determined that a pickup truck operated by the man was traveling north on Old Māmalahoa Highway when it crossed over the double-yellow lines and ran off the roadway. It then re-entered the highway, struck a rock embankment and overturned.
The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Queen’s North Hawaiʻi Community Hospital for medical treatment. He was then transported to Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu, where he is still in critical condition.
