GPA showcase set for 10th event

The 10th annual GPA Football showcase and combine is set for June 8 at Saint Louis School.

More than 20 college football coaches will be present, hoping to find the next Tua Tagovailoa, Nick Herbig or Alohi Gilman, who all gained exposure as high schoolers at GPA camps.

All the latest sports news from Hawaii’s sports station

Sponsors for the camp include the Tua Foundation, the Marcus Mariota Foundation, as well as the Jesse Sapolu’s Men in the Trenches organization and Raising Champions LLC.

“Extremely proud,” organizer Rich Miano told KHON2 sports director Rob DeMello. “I just think that there’s been so many athletes in Hawaii that have might possibly been overlooked because of the logistics, but it seems like we have more than our fair representation, and most of these young men that have became either division one stars are playing in the NFL have come through the camp. Ten years is a long time.

“The fact that there are so many good corporations, so many foundations, so many people that have supported to make this is affordable is possible. But I think what really makes me happy is when I see the parents come to Diane Tagovailoa and Lisa Sapolu to support those classes. When I see the parents and the students understand recruiting, getting it through college coaches and being able to use that, and then the interaction after the camp is over, with them being proactive, then feeling better about the process because this is a process to get your young person into college and it’s a science and we want to make that science a little bit more easy for these parents and the kids.”
