Kilauea Ep. 23: Pele shoots lava fountains over 1,000 feet

HONOLULU (KHON2) — In a powerful display on the Big Island, Pele kickstarts Kilauea’s thirteenth episode with lava fountains over 1,000 feet high.

According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the ongoing eruption out of Halemaʻumaʻu started at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 25.

Officials added that seismic tremor increased about 15 minutes later, which was the same time fountaining increased in height and volume.

Lava fountaining escalated quickly, with the south vent seeing fountaining 230 feet in height. Over in the north vent, lava fountains exceeded 1,000 feet.
