Looking for summer keiki things to do? Try this

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Families are invited to Keiki Summer Reading Day at Hale Laʻakea Library on the Windward Community College campus.

The free event will be held on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those attending can expect music, crafts, food and a full day of discovery rooted in Native Hawaiian storytelling and learning.

The keiki who attend will receive a free bilingual Ōlelo Hawaiʻi-English book to take home.

Kūpuna will share moʻolelo (oral histories/stories) about the Koʻolau region. Keiki can enjoy a scavenger hunt that helps them explore how the library works and where to find special resources like the Hawaiʻi Collection.

“The Koʻolaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club is thrilled to be partnering with Hale Laʻakea Library at Windward Community College to make this event possible,” said Hauʻolihiwahiwa Moniz, Chair of the Nā Mea Hawaiʻi Committee for Koʻolaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club. “Serving the Koʻolau community as the largest and oldest Native Hawaiian community organization in the region is a point of pride and aloha for our Club.”

1. Respect library spaces: Leave food and drinks outside. Clean hands help protect books and craft supplies. Keep voices low while in the reading areas.

2. Ask before you snap photos: Some kūpuna and guests may not want their pictures taken. Always ask first.

3. Be ready to learn and share: The scavenger hunt is designed to help keiki learn while having fun. Grown-ups are encouraged to join in and share in the experience.

“We hope to inspire more keiki and their families to visit the library and spend time immersing themselves in the moʻolelo kūpuna (ancestral histories) of our incredible home,” added Moniz.
