HONOLULU (KHON2) — Keeping local families in Hawaii is what Governor Josh Green hopes will happen after he signed new affordable housing legislation into law on Tuesday, May 28.
The new law increases the amount of units that can be built on one lot.
Homeowners used to be able to build one ohana unit or accessory dwelling unit in addition to the main house on their property, but that changed with a stroke of a pen by Gov. Green.
“This will allow you to build up to two units on your property. This is a very straightforward way to help in the right place, build some additional capacity for our people,” Gov. Green said.
