Police still searching for suspects following deadly Makaha shooting

MAKAHA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Honolulu Police are still investigating what led to a deadly shooting in Makaha on Wednesday night that left a 19-year-old dead, and four others hospitalized.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Crime scene investigators returned to the scene on Thursday, May 29, with a search warrant and were seen looking inside the Lahaina Street home.

One man who lives nearby said he heard four gunshots just after 9 p.m.

“Real fast like pah, pah, pah, pah, in rapid succession,” said the neighbor, Chris.

“Then I heard tires screech after that,” he added.

So far, police said the investigation has revealed that a group of suspects parked down the road from the Lahaina Street home and walked to the house on foot.

“They started fighting with other people on the scene and the physical altercation turned bad when one of the suspects shot multiple rounds at the victim’s group,” Lt. Deena Thoemmes, Honolulu Police Homicide Detail, said Thursday morning at the scene.

“A lot of witnesses left the scene prior to arrival and are at the hospital being interviewed,” she added.

The family of the 19-year-old is asking for privacy at this time.

“Last night shook our community, it shook me as a mother, as a family member,” said Sen. Samantha DeCorte (Ko Olina, Waianae, Makaha).

“The biggest thing I’m concerned about right now is the possibility of retaliation,” she added. “It’s so important we get the message out to the 96792 to stay calm and let HPD do their job.”

Chief Joe Logan said in a statement:

“Without a doubt, this is a tough time for our Waianae community. We want to assure everyone right now, the scene is safe, and we’re doing all we can to make an arrest in this case. We know the community wants to help – and the best way to do that is to give us the time we need to carry out this investigation carefully and thoroughly. Also, share any information that you think could help.”
