The Hilo Men’s Basketball team held their “UH Hilo Coaches Hawaiian Islands Tour” this past week.
The Vulcans coaches, Kaniela Aiona (Head Coach) and Steve Kinder (Assistant Coach) along with current/former players traveled to 6 different islands in 1 week to hold a single camp on all 6 of those islands.
“We felt like this was a great time to do it. You know, right before everybody gets going for the summer,” said Aiona. “Hopefully give them some inspiration, some habits to work on over the summer and just try to help continue to grow the game here.”
The Vulcans started in Hilo on the Big Islands on Saturday May 17th and ended in Kapa’a, Kaua’i on Thursday May 22nd.
This was the first time the Vulcans held this time of camp tour, and Aiona hopes to do it again in the future.
“Those (youth camps) were some of our some of our foundational memories as basketball players. And we want to make sure that we do our part to try to spread the game and give back the same type of thing that we were so fortunate to have. That’s always exciting to me,” said Aiona.
Full camp route:
- Big Island – May 17th
- Maui – May 18th
- Moloka’i – May 19th
- Lana’i – May 20th
- O’ahu – May 21st
- Kaua’i – May 22nd
If you missed out on these camps, Aiona said he is already starting to plan the next island tour.
