HONOLULU (KHON2) — A recent water sample from the Volcano Catchment Chlorinator of the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park water system detected low levels of a chemical substance in the water.
The state department was notified last week of an industrial solvent called “PCBTF”, a benzene chemical, which was detected in the water found in April.
The solvent is currently not regulated in drinking water, meaning there is no maximum contaminant level or state environmental action level.
According to officials, the current information they have does not indicate a health risk at the level that was detected.
The water system continues to meet all federal and state standards for safe drinking water.
