KIHEI, Hawaiʻi (KHON2) — On Monday, June 2, a Maui man died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash in Kihei last week.
Kenneth Gricus, 62, was identified as the driver who passed away. On May 28, around 10 a.m., he was traveling north on Liloa Drive when he “lost control” and “began to weave” while approaching a roundabout at the intersection of Piikea Avenue and Liloa Drive.
According to the Maui Police Department, Gricus’ moped overturned and ejected him after he struck a raised curb near the southern crosswalk. The investigation revealed he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
Gricus was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition, where he later died in the early morning hours on Monday, June 2.
“The Maui Police Department extends our deepest condolences to Mr. Gricus’ family and friends,” officials said Tuesday.
MPD said Gricus was the 12th traffic death in Maui County for 2025. At this time last year, there were only seven reported traffic deaths in the county.
