HONOLULU (KHON2) — A fire that tore through a vacant home in Waipahu over the weekend has been classified as arson, according to the Honolulu Fire Department.
The blaze broke out around 6:43 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, at a small, single-story home on Awalau Street. When firefighters arrived, the structure was already engulfed in flames.
Crews launched a defensive attack and had the fire under control by 6:56 p.m. It was fully extinguished shortly after 8 p.m. No injuries were reported.
Fire investigators determined the fire started in the dining room and noted that an accelerant detection dog alerted to the presence of ignitable liquids.
The home was vacant at the time, and damages are estimated at $328,000 to the structure. No contents were reported lost.
The investigation remains ongoing.
