PUNALUU, Hawaii (KHON2) — An investigation is underway following a fatal multi-vehicle crash in the Punaluu area on Tuesday, June 17.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, the crash happened just before 9 p.m. when a 28-year-old woman and her three passengers, a 28-year-old and two 19-year-olds, were driving south on Kamehameha Highway.
Officials said the car crossed into the northbound lane and “collided head-on with a 17-year-old female motorist.”
HPD added that the 28-year-old’s car overturned and displaced all occupants.
Six Honolulu Fire Department units responded to the scene and used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the 28-year-old driver and her passengers.
Paramedics with Honolulu Emergency Medical Services took over care once they were extricated and pronounced the 28-year-old driver and one of the 19-year-old passengers dead at the scene.
The other 28-year-old and 19-year-old passengers were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The 17-year-old driver “sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital in good condition.”

HPD said none of the passengers in the 28-year-old’s car were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The incident marks Oahu’s 35th and 36th traffic fatalities of 2025, compared to 15 at the same time last year.
