HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Honolulu Police Commission gathered on June 18 to select an interim chief, iron out the process to hire a permanent leader and review the performance of outgoing Chief Joe Logan, who is set to retire in July.
The seven-member police commission were set to tackle a crowded agenda, including the picking of an interim leader. However, the commissioners said they were uncomfortable selecting an interim chief that feels rushed and would put the department in a challenging place of having two transition periods.
The commission voted to follow the City Charter, which says that the most senior deputy chief would take over the interim chief position until a permanent chief is chosen.
This makes Rade Vanic, who last served as interim chief before Logan was selected, the new interim chief.
Before the decision was made, Logan said his goodbyes and commissioners shared their gratitude to him.
The commissioners also heard from seven of the eight candidates who applied for the interim chief role, with six of them saying they would apply for the permanent position.
The process to select a new, permanent chief is likely going to take between six months to a year, with the full process yet to be discussed amongst the commission.
