How you can join KHON2 for Founder’s Day

HONOLULU (KHON2) — KHON2 is celebrating Founder’s Day by giving back to our Hawaiʻi community.

Friday, June 20, is Founder’s Day at KHON2; and we’re excited to give back to the community that gives so much to us!

This year, we are proud to support a long-time partner: Keiki O Ka Aina and the Laulima Giving Program.

As part of their annual Back2School Drive, we’ll be helping students across O‘ahu get ready for the new school year. Many of these keiki (children) attend Title I elementary and middle schools, which means they could use a little extra help.

On Friday, June 20, we’ll be collecting new school supplies at Fisher Hawaii in Kaka‘ako (690 Pohukaina Street) from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Viewers are invited to come by and drop off items like pencils, paper, crayons, markers, folders and more. Every donation makes a big difference.

What is Keiki O Ka Aina

Keiki O Ka ʻĀina Family Learning Centers (KOKA-FLC) is a group in Hawaiʻi that helps Native Hawaiian families by teaching children, supporting parents and keeping Native Hawaiian culture alive.

Their goal is to make sure all keiki are ready for school and every family has what they need to grow strong and confident. They believe that strong families build strong communities.

KOKA-FLC offers fun programs where kids and parents learn together. They use the ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi language and traditions to teach, and they help parents feel good about being their child’s first teacher. They also provide job training, emotional support and cultural events.

Their dream is to have helpful programs on every island in Hawaiʻi so families can learn and grow together.

What is the Laulima Giving Program

The Laulima Giving Program is a special project that helps people in Hawaiʻi who are going through hard times. It is run by Keiki O Ka ʻĀina, a local nonprofit group that cares for keiki, elders kūpuna (elders/senior citizens) and `ohana (families).

The program began as a program to make sure every keiki could get a toy for Christmas, but it now helps people all year. In 2024, they gave over $250,000 to families in Lāhainā and donated toys, school supplies and gift cards to schools, hospitals, shelters and prisons.

More than 6,000 people got help. Thanks to the kindness of the community, Laulima is able to bring hope and joy. They will keep helping people in need in 2025 and beyond.

If you can’t make it in person, you can still help. Visit the Laulima Giving Program website to sponsor a student and support their back-to-school needs.

There’s another chance to donate on Saturday, June 21, at Fisher Hawaiʻi’s Māpunapuna location.

At KHON2, we believe in helping our keiki succeed. Let’s work together to make sure every keiki starts the school year with the tools they need to learn, grow and thrive.
