Oahu golf course additions hope to make game more accessible to all

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A couple golf courses on Oahu recently opened new features to save golfers some time and money. They say the ultimate goal is to make golf more accessible and introduce more people to the sport.

Among Pearl at Kalauao’s recent renovation is the three-hole “pitch and putt” area called “Na Momi Ekolu.” Ranging from 40 to 60 yards, it serves as the perfect place for seasoned golfers to sharpen their short game or for beginners to get started.

“This is kind of a low barrier way to introduce people to the game that it’s not as intimidating,” said Ed Kageyama, Pearl at Kalauao general manager.

The new feature has been open for just a week. So far, so good.

“People that have tried it have loved it,” Kageyama said. “We have people play 18 holes, you know have some beverages, come out here after and settle some bets.”

In Ewa Beach, the Hawaii Prince Golf Course launched its par three course in May. It’s using their existing holes and just set up shorter tees.

“Think we offer a unique opportunity for all levels of golfers to come out and you know experience a higher level, higher end, resort style course,” said William Suckoll, Hawaii Prince Golf Course Superintendent.

“Everybody normally plays a regular golf course, but time’s always an issue, cost is an issue,” said Kalani Kiaaina, Hawaii Prince Golf Course Assistant golf pro.

Right now, only Hawaii Prince’s C course has the short tees. And par three play is only available for weekday twilight. But they plan on adding the short tees to the B and A courses later this summer.

Both courses are celebrating their new additions with some specials. At the Hawaii Prince, one round at the par three course gets you a free drink at the restaurant which can even be a beer. And at Pearl at Kalauao, there’s the “launch and loop” special. Paying for one loop gets a free pupu or drink at the restaurant.

“Good for kids too I would assume? Definitely good for kids,” Kiaaina said. “I grew up playing when I was about 8-, 9-years-old and we only played par three courses back then. So it was a great way to learn the game.”

Hawaii Prince says the par three course is set up perfectly for smaller tournaments. Golfers of all levels could get in and out quicker than traditional tournaments. And Na Momi Ekolu’s tee markers also have cup holders. And they’ve already got corporate events scheduled.

“But really bottom line is just everyone have a good time while they’re here,” Kageyama said.
