The Kahuku Red Raiders High School Surf Team finished up a successful high school season in Hawaii, and are now getting ready to send seven surfers to California to compete in the Interscholastic National Championship in June.
“The kids are really excited about it. I feel like this is, at least since I’ve been coach, our most organized effort that we’ve had to make sure the kids are all set up and prepared to be there,” said Kahuku Head Coach Trenton McCullough.
The competition will run from June 14th through the 16th at Salt Creek on Dana Point.
This event is giving these high schoolers another chance to compete, but also an opportunity to get a taste of competition from surfers across the west coast.
“I’m really excited to be there and for everyone to be representing Hawaii. I mean, obviously winning is like the dream right? But it’s competition, so who knows. But hopefully this experience they have with the surf team, preparing for a contest, preparing to travel as a team, that can help them and give those kind of valuable life experiences that will serve them later on,” said McCullough.
While the team prepares, they also have a GoFundMe set up for those who want to help send the local athletes to California. The surf team also saying that the funds raised won’t just help for the competition next month, but will also help pay for the Hawaii season fees next year.
