HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiian Electric (HECO) warned customers to be aware of a scammer using QR codes to target local businesses.
Since mid-June, HECO has received 10 fraud reports from Oahu businesses.
“Scammers are constantly updating their arsenal, so it’s critical for all customers to stay alert and
vigilant,” said Brendan Bailey, HECO vice president of customer service. “Don’t let a scammer’s threat of disconnection make you a victim.”
The scammers threatened to disconnect the customer’s power unless paid.
HECO reported that at least seven of the fraud calls were made from the same local number. Officials said the number started with 458.
When a customer called the number back, they reached a recording for a New York-area electric utility.
Two businesses received QR codes to pay and together sent $4,000 to the scammers. Others made cash payments at a drugstore.

Tips to identify an online scam
Caller ID can be manipulated to show a legitimate phone number. HECO advised it could be an indicator of a scam if the caller does any of the following:
- Says your account is delinquent and threatens to shut off service immediately unless payment is made.
- Demands immediate payment via gift cards, money transfer, prepaid debit cards or by Bitcoin.
- Asks to meet you in person to pick up a payment.
Tips to avoid a scam
- Think before clicking on an embedded link or attachment in an email.
- Ensure someone is wearing official attire with a logo, driving a properly labeled vehicle and carrying company identification if they show up at your house or place of business claiming to be from a company.
If unsure whether you’re communicating with an official company representative or a scammer, check with customer service and the company’s policies.
