HONOLULU (KHON2) — Mayor Rick Blangiardi proudly announced the formal establishment of a Sister City agreement between Honolulu, Hawaii, and Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan, marked by a historic signing ceremony on Friday.
In attendance were Shibuya City Mayor Ken Hasebe, along with Chair of the City Assembly, Takashi Maruyama, who warmly welcomed City and County of Honolulu Deputy Managing Director Krishna Jayaram and Chief of Staff Andy Sugg.
The momentous signing ceremony took place at the venue of the Hawaii Expo 2024 in Shibuya City, following a three-day visit by Jayaram and Sugg, during which they engaged with Mayor Hasebe and key members of his administration while exploring the vibrant city.
Shibuya now stands as Honolulu’s 36th Sister City relationship, and the 10th in Japan. Mayor Blangiardi and Honolulu City Council Chair Tommy Waters officially sealed the agreement on May 21, 2024, at Honolulu Hale.
“The City and County of Honolulu is delighted to forge this Sister City partnership with Shibuya, Tokyo,” Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed. “This agreement symbolizes the robust bonds of friendship and cultural exchange between our cities. We eagerly anticipate collaborating on endeavors that will enrich both communities and promote mutual understanding and advancement.”
This Sister City agreement aims to facilitate cultural exchange, enhance economic cooperation, and share best practices between Honolulu and Shibuya, underscoring the dedication of both cities to nurturing international friendship and collaboration.
