MAILI, Oahu (KHON2) — The Honolulu Fire Department has determined the cause of the brush fire in Maili on July 6.
In an update provided by HFD on July 15, they classified the cause of the fire as undetermined
HFD’s investigation consisted of examining the area, collecting and analyzing evidence, interviewing residents and reviewing weather conditions and environmental factors.
HFD said that the fire started near Paʻakea Road in the vicinity of “Lualualei Very Low Frequency Transmitter.”
The case remains open, with a damage assessment still in progress.
This comes after the fire initially broke out on July 6. HFD said there were up to 31 units responding, including two helicopters and federal firefighters.
An evacuation order was issued for residents mauka of Kulaaupuni Road, with officials officially confirming the fire was fully contained on July 7.
The fire claimed the life of 94-year-old Maria Pascual, who died from smoke inhalation.
