HONOLULU (KHON2) — A new car-sharing service is now available across Oʻahu. Zipcar, a membership-based rental company, allows users to book cars by the hour or day all from their phone.
There’s no worries about gasoline fill-ups; vehicle maintenance, repairs or registration; insurance payments or monthly payments on a loan or lease. It’s an easy way to scoot around the island without all the extra that comes with owning the vehicle.
Zipcars also have university student and business options. So, taking a trip off campus or delivering something is much easier.
Best of all, Zipcar memberships are national. So, you can be a member in Boston while using a car in Honolulu while visiting.
How it works
To join, applicants must be at least 21 years old (18 for university students or where legally allowed) and hold a valid driver’s license. Once approved, members can book cars immediately using the Zipcar app. Most people are approved within minutes.
To start, users choose a membership plan. Zipcar verifies identity and driver’s license information. After that, booking a car is simple. All you have to do is use the app, turn on Bluetooth and location services and unlock a vehicle nearby.
What’s included
Each reservation includes up to 200 miles per day, a gas credit card or EV charging, insurance options and 24/7 support. Cars range from sedans and SUVs to cargo vans and even luxury rentals. Every Zipcar has a “home” parking spot for easy return.
Gas is always included. Members use the free gas card stored in the car’s visor. If the tank is less than a quarter full, it’s the driver’s job to fill it before returning. fee.
Cleaning up after your trip is required. Any leftover mess or smoking may result in a $50 or more charge. Cars must also be returned on time to their home location.
More access, less cost
Zipcar members avoid the monthly cost of owning a car. There are no finance charges or surprise repairs. According to Zipcar’s own reports, users can save more than $1,000 per month. Membership starts at $9 a month or $90 for a year.
“We want to make it easier for people to live car-free,” according to Zipcar’s materials. “That means affordable access to a car when you need it, and no responsibilities when you don’t.”
Self-service and stress free
Everything happens through the app. There’s no paperwork or waiting for someone to meet you. Once your reservation starts, use your phone to unlock the car and begin your trip. Roadside help is available 24/7.
If you’re not sure where to start, Zipcar’s website allows you to search by address to see which cars are nearby. You can also get your first month free with the promo code MONTHOFF.
Zipcar in your neighborhood
Zipcars are located across Oʻahu in neighborhoods where members live, work or go to school. Vehicles can be booked for errands, appointments, beach days or weekend trips. Each car comes maintained and ready to go.
