Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano wants to remind families that applying for the child’s Social Security number (SSN) is an important step for future benefits the child may be eligible for.
Applying for an SSN can be done at birth, during the hospital stay. This is needed to claim a child as a dependent for income tax purposes or open a bank account in the child’s name.
