Hawaii County names new interim police chief

HILO, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Hawaii County Police Commission has named a new interim leader.

On July 18, Hawaii County named Deputy Chief Reed Mahuna as the interim chief of police effective Sept. 1.

“I would like to thank the members of the Hawai‘i County Police Commission for the trust they have put in me,” said Mahuna.

Mahuna started his career on the Big Island in 1998.

“When I started as a South Hilo patrol officer in 1998, I would never have dreamed where this career would take me. I am now entrusted with leading the finest police department in the nation, protecting one of the most beautiful places in the world,” Mahuna added.

This comes after the commission accepted the resignation of Chief Ben Moszkowicz.

“Regardless of today’s action, nothing should take away from Ben Moszkowicz’s 25 years of service to the people of Oahu and Hawaii,” said Robert Cavaco, president of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers. “We respect Ben’s work as a law enforcement officer and servant of our community.”
