Wildly dedicated: Celebrate National Zookeeper Week

HONOLULU (KHON2) — National Zookeeper Week is every third week in July, and from July 20 to 26, the City and County of Honolulu is celebrating.

The zookeepers at the Honolulu Zoo tend to more than 900 animals across the 42-acre facility daily.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate the tireless efforts of our wonderful zookeepers,” Honolulu Zoo Director Linda Santos said. “These hard-working individuals not only ensure that all of our animals are well cared for, but also serve as educators and wildlife ambassadors.”

This week is meant to honor all of the animal caretakers from zoos, aquariums and wildlife sanctuaries across the country.

“Our zookeepers are the heart and soul of the Honolulu Zoo,” Mayor Rick Blangiardi said. “Their dedication to the health, well-being and daily care of the animals in their charge is truly inspiring. We are proud to honor them this week—and every week—for the remarkable work they do.”

Zookeepers are taking care of the animals’ safety and health daily. They are responsible for preparing specialized diets and maintaining habitats for a variety of species.

Officials want to acknowledge the long hours, early and physically demanding tasks they take on every day.
