HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Honolulu Police Department is alerting the public about a phone scam where an individual claims a loved one has been arrested.
According to HPD, a Hawaiʻi resident received a phone call from a man claiming to be an attorney, where he said the resident’s son had gotten into a car crash and was arrested.
The caller then requested $8,000 for bail money.
The resident contacted their bank for assistance, with the bank saying that the call was likely a scam.
After the bank’s advice, the resident checked in with the son to verify his safety, and then reported to suspicious call to authorities.
Officials say that bail or bond payments are only accepted at police stations, and officers will not meet you anywhere to collect any forms of payment.
