HONOLULU, HI (KHON2) — This is the update from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center as of Monday July 28.
Major Hurricane Iona: Hurricane Iona continues to strengthen while far from the islands. Iona has reached Cat 3 strength and additional strengthening can be expected in the short-term.
Winds over the next 12 hours could reach 130 mph around the center, before gradually weakening starting Wednesday.
Hurricane Iona is far to the south of Hawaii, but could trigger strong trade winds later this week. There is no current direct impact from Hurricane Iona as it passes south of the islands.
Tropical Storm Keli: Keli shows little change as of this update. It’s a small system in diameter and not a direct impact to the Hawaiian Islands as it passes south Tuesday while weakening.
Invest 98E: This area of disturbed weather is east of Iona and Keli. It’s expected to take a similar path south of the islands while moving west. There is currently a 60% of tropical depression formation in the next 48 hours. This system is not expected to impact the Hawaiian Islands.
