Big Island tsunami resources, shelter locations

HONOLULU (KHON2) — In response to a Tsunami Warning, Hawaiʻi County has ordered an immediate evacuation of all tsunami inundation zones.

The evacuation order follows an 8.7 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, at 1:25 p.m. HST.

Tsunami activity has been recorded in the western Pacific Ocean, and the first wave is expected to hit Hawaiʻi at approximately 7:17 p.m. HST.

Residents of all islands in the affected areas of Hawaii Island are instructed to evacuate no later than 6:17 p.m. and stay away from coastal zones until officials declare them safe.

Where to find emergency shelters

Hawaii Island has opened shelters in several places. It is advised to go to the closest one to where you are.

What you need to do

There are several things to do as you are evacuating. Hawaii Island officials listed these as the most important.

  • Leave evacuation zones immediately. You can click here to check if you’re in one.
  • Sign up for emergency alerts by clicking here.
  • Set a family meeting place and an off-island contact.
  • Help neighbors who may need assistance.
  • If time allows, turn off your gas, electricity and water before leaving.
