KĀʻANAPALI, Hawaii (KHON2) — The brush fire that broke out above Kāʻanapali around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4, has been declared 100% contained.
The Maui County Fire Department said crews remain on site, cleaning up and keeping an eye on hot spots just to be safe.
The fire began above Honoapiʻilani Highway near Kakaʻalaneo Drive. Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) quickly sent out safety alerts, warning locals to stay alert and be ready to evacuate if the fire worsened.
According to MFD, it’s been estimated that 33 acres were burned. The fire caused damage to storage buildings at the Lahaina Sugar Cane Train site and a few abandoned rail cars in the area.
While officials investigate the damage further, a cost estimate has yet to be determined.
Residents living between Puʻukoliʻi Road and Kakaʻalaneo Drive were told to evacuate in the meantime due to the evolving brush fire. Meanwhile, Honoapiʻilani Highway was shut down in both directions so fire crews could maintain their job safely.
Several power poles were impacted, causing outages for over 300 customers. The power system is currently undergoing repairs by Hawaiian Electric, but thankfully, there were no injuries reported during the incident.
All closures were lifted by early afternoon, and flights from Kapalua Airport were temporarily canceled due to smoke and congestion.
