2 years later: A look at Lahaina’s progress

LAHAINA, Hawaii (KHON2) — It’s been two years since the deadly Maui wildfires, a tragedy that took 102 lives and displaced thousands. Recovery is still ongoing.

KHON2’s Nikki Schenfeld went live from Front Street, showcasing signs of life returning to Lahaina in terms of nature reclaiming the business district.

Front Street has remained untouched since the debris cleanup was completed, but on smaller streets such as Wainee, Wahikuli and Aineakea, many homes are being built once again.

The anniversary brings mixed feelings for those who once lived in the area. Some want nothing to do with the day, some remain on the island but away from Lahaina, while others want to be with their community.

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said he feels hopeful for the community and everything they’ve gone through.
