HONOLULU (KHON2) — Friday, Aug. 8 is National Spam Musubi Day. L&L Hawaiian BBQ is celebrating by giving out free spam musubis at all locations from noon to 2 p.m.
National SPAM® Musubi Day was established in 2021 and falls on Aug. 8 which is recognition to Hawaii’s 808 area code, a symbol of local pride.
The musubi concept goes back to 19th-century Japanese immigrants who brought the idea of onigir which is rice balls wrapped in seaweed to Hawaii. The word musubi comes from the Japanese verb musubu, which means ‘to bind or tie together.’
L&L is ecstatic to be a top seller of SPAM® Musubi in the country, serving over 6.2 million musubi every year across 230+ locations. That’s about 17,000 a day.
