Second Suspect in Maui IED Investigation Pleads Guilty

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A second suspect arrested in connection with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found on Maui has pleaded guilty in federal court.

On Friday, Aug. 8, at around 11 a.m., Jess Kiesel Lee stood before the U.S. District Judge Jill A. Otake and pleaded guilty to one count of Felon in Possession of an Explosive. He is the second person charged in connection with the Maui IED case. 

No booking photo of Lee has been released.

According to court records, Jess Kiesel Lee gave up his right to have a grand jury charge him and was told of his rights before pleading guilty. 

Federal prosecutors also explained what the toughest punishment could be and gave a summary of the proof they had against him.

Judge Otake accepted the plea, found Lee guilty, and ordered a presentence investigation. Lee could face serious prison time and fines. 

His sentencing is set for Dec. 1, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. in Aha Kanawai and he will stay in federal custody until then.
